Terminal 2 Arrivals
Melbourne Airport has been achieving consistently strong growth in international passenger numbers for the past five to seven years and this is expected to continue. In order to accommodate the increased numbers, additional capacity in the Terminal 2 (T2) International Arrivals Hall is required. The improved T2 Arrivals Hall will deliver better services – including vertical transport and retail offerings – to streamline passenger arrivals and improve the overall customer journey experience.
The T2 Arrivals Hall redevelopment will include an expansion of the building, new escalators, a central exit of arriving passengers from the Customs and Baggage Reclaim hall, and reconfigured and improved retail facilities and amenities.
Root Partnerships (RP) was engaged by Melbourne Airport to provide design management and project management services for the feasibility, schematic and design development phases of the project. RP has also been engaged to provide procurement services and construction contract administrator services for the construction and DLP phases. Design phase was completed in April 2019, and Construction phase commenced in August 2019.
The redevelopment of the Arrivals Hall is a significant undertaking for the Airport with the potential for major disruption to the Airport’s operations and to passengers. The design must accommodate an existing 40-year-old road structure overhead and significant existing services in-ground, whilst still achieving the client’s desired improvements. The construction phase is being implemented in stages so that the Arrivals Hall can continue to operate.
