Fishermans Bend Secondary School
Victorian School Building Authority
Fishermans Bend Secondary School (FBSS) is one of a growing number of vertical government schools being rolled out in Victoria to help meet increasing demand. The school is being developed by The Victoria School Building Association (VSBA), a division of the Victorian Department of Education and Training (DET).
The four-storey school in Port Melbourne, due for completion in 2022, will accommodate 1100 students and 124 staff. The school will have a strong emphasis on science, technology, engineering, arts and maths – STEAM – with a high- tech robotics workshop, digital technology and fabrication lab. This is intended to expose students to career pathways that align with the planned Fishermans Bend design, engineering and manufacturing precinct that the school will sit within.
The precinct is an ambitious urban renewal project expected to house 80,000 residents and support 80,000 knowledge economy jobs by 2050. The state-of-the-art school showcases an environmentally sustainable design and will also include an array of arts, food technology, sports and Learning Resource Centre spaces that can be shared with the community.
Root Partnerships (RP) is providing project management and superintendent services including management of the tender and tender evaluation process; identifying risks and risk mitigation/management strategies; contract negotiations and preparation; and management and superintendence of the construction. A Contractor was appointed in November 2019 and has a target Practical Completion date of late 2021 in order to be ready for the start of Term 1 2022.
FBSS is one of the first vertical schools, and the largest, to be completed in Victoria, and the first publicly funded project in the Fishermans Bend Urban Renewal Precinct. As such the project team have undertaken and managed a number of activities that are new to both the VSBA and the precinct.
