Australian Sports Museum
The Australian Sports Museum (ASM) – formally the National Sports Museum – is a partner brand to the very popular Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) stadium tour.
The ASM undertook a structural and conceptual renewal to transform it into a leading global museum that includes interactive and unique experiences from touch screens and avatars, to climbable walls and sporting challenges. Along with refreshing the permanent galleries – each of which is dedicated to a different sport – the ASM sought to maximise visitor accessibility, engagement and participation.
Root Partnerships (RP) assisted and advocated on behalf of the MCC and design team, providing hands-on project management and superintendent services focussed on the preparation for and completion of the construction phase.
RP was responsible for preparing and overseeing the construction contractor procurement process, so that a construction contract could be awarded for the completion of the primary refurbishment works. As superintendent, RP ensured budget, program, quality and OH&S were carefully managed, and disruption to the facility was minimised.
RP also worked closely with the team to ensure seamless integration of the audio-visual technologies, exhibitions and content into the built form.
The project faced both a tight program and budget. RP drove accountability of the design team and contractor and minimised cost risk during construction by identifying value management initiatives and minimising design changes. As works were being undertaken in a live environment, RP worked with the team to ensure limited disruption from the construction and the mitigation of delay risks. This resulted in no disruptions to MCG operations.
